Abstract. We discuss the problem of numerical simulation of shear flows on the example of Kelvin – Helmholtz instability. A numerical algorithm cSPH-TVD (combined SPH-TVD) adequately describes the dynamics of the instability of tangential discontinuity in the shallow water model.

Key words: numerical methods, hybrid methods, hyperbolic equations, Kelvin – Helmholtz instability, hydrodynamics.
